What We Did
We met our guide (a Yale undergraduate) and approximately 15-20 other tour takers at the Yale Visitor Center on Elm Street. Our guide then led us along a multi-block tour, describing student life and pointing out a number of key buildings, Yale’s “signature campus spaces,” including Branford College and Harkness Tower on High Street, Sterling Memorial Library on York Street, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library on Wall Street.
Although access to parts of the libraries are limited to students only, we were able to walk around a little inside Sterling Memorial Library, Yale’s largest library and one of the school’s most iconic buildings. We were also able to explore the Rare Book library a bit. This library has a more modern but equally stunning look: it features translucent marble panels on the outside and a glass-enclosed, bookshelf-filled core inside. This library houses, among other historical books, the Gutenberg Bible.
How Much We Spent
The tour was free. We did spend a little on souvenirs in the bookstores.
How Much Time We Spent There
About 3 hours. We arrived a few minutes early for our 10:00 tour, which lasted an hour. We wandered around campus a little bit after the tour, and then we spent some time in a few bookstores before heading out of town. We didn’t do anything else in New Haven: it was our last day of the road trip, and we still had a little more than six hours to go before we’d reach home.
What We Liked
The campus really is beautiful with its bricked-lined and tree-shaded walkways and its amazing, old architecture. Our daughter, who was into the Harry Potter books at the time, said she felt like we were visiting Hogwarts. It’s kind of hokey, but we also liked that all four of us can now say, “I’ve been to Yale.”
What We Didn't Like
Considering how large the campus is, we saw relatively little. I wish we could have seen and gone inside more of the buildings. Also, we had a little trouble hearing our guide at times because we were outside and our group was sizable.
Was it worth it?
Yes. It was really cool walking across this prestigious campus, whose graduates include U.S. presidents, senators, CEOs of major companies, and Supreme Court justices. If you go, keep in mind that Yale’s central campus covers 373 acres but the public tour covers only about a five-block area. If you or your high-schooler is hoping to see inside any of the residential buildings or any program-specific buildings, you’ll need to sign up for an undergraduate tour.

Did You Know? The Harkness Tower, part of Branford College, houses the Yale Memorial Carillon, a set of bells within the tower that are played using a keyboard. Students have been sounding the bells since 1949, playing the music of both classic artists, like Bach, and modern artists, like Taylor Swift. The bells are played at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. every day.
