A&M Peanut Shop

What It Is

A small, decades-old nut and candy store (established in 1947), that specializes in “fresh-roasted peanuts and southern hospitality.”

Where It Is

Mobile, Alabama

When We Went

June 2022

What We Did

We examined the glass-enclosed shelves of this narrow store—once owned by the Planters company—eyeing its various nuts and goodies, most of which are sold by weight.  We selected three different treats: Creole peanuts, Spanish peanuts, and Dixie Delight (white chocolate, peanuts, marshmallows, and Cap’n Crunch cereal) and walked half a block to Bienville Square to enjoy the shady trees, the cast iron fountain, and our goodies.

How Much We Spent

Not recorded.

How Much Time We Spent There

About 25 minutes.

What We Liked

We had no idea what Creole or Spanish peanuts were, but we took a chance and enjoyed them very much.  The Dixie Delights were good, too.  I loved the peacefulness of the square and the pretty trees.

What We Didn't Like

There weren’t, as far as we could tell, any public restrooms in the area.  We ended up buying a couple of drinks in Subway just so we could use the facilities.

Was it worth it?

Yes.  If you’re in the area, or if you’ll be passing through, block out half an hour to visit the store and enjoy the square.  We traveled from Montgomery, Alabama, to Biloxi, Mississippi, that day and knew we’d be passing through Mobile.  A&M Peanut Shop repeatedly came up on things to do in Mobile, and we found it a worthy and tasty addition to our itinerary.

Did You Know?  According to the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation, Alabama produces an average of more than 400 million pounds of peanuts per year.  Creole peanuts, which are flavored with a spicy/Cajun seasoning, are usually made with runner peanuts, the most common type of peanut grown in Alabama.

Spanish peanuts, on the other hand, are a variety of peanut known for its reddish-brown skin.  Spanish peanuts are primarily grown in Texas and Oklahoma.
